“What we don’t know about, we can’t protect,” said Susan Pell, Executive Director

of the United States Botanic Garden. “As a result, we really need a baseline understanding

of what things are at risk.”

The scientists examined the species’ extinction risk, geographic and taxonomic

diversity patterns, and the most serious threats to the species. Invasive and problematic

pests and diseases emerged as the most common threat.
