NASA Reconnects with Voyager 2, Over 12 Billion Miles Away in Interstellar Space

On August 1, 2023, NASA received a long-awaited signal from the Voyager 2 spacecraft, located over 12 billion miles away in interstellar space. The spacecraft had been silent for days after flight controllers mistakenly sent a wrong command that caused its antenna to tilt away from Earth, severing communication.

The Deep Space Network, a network of giant radio antennas spread across the globe, detected a “heartbeat signal” from Voyager 2, indicating that the 46-year-old spacecraft is still operational. This discovery brought relief to the project team, who feared that the spacecraft might be irreversibly lost.

Now, the focus is on reestablishing communication with Voyager 2. Flight controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California will attempt to turn the spacecraft’s antenna back toward Earth. However, there are doubts about the success of this command, as the antenna is currently only 2% off-kilter. If the attempt fails, the team will have to wait until October for an automatic spacecraft reset.

Voyager 2 and its identical twin, Voyager 1, were launched in 1977 with the mission of exploring the outer planets. Despite their age, both spacecraft continue to function well. Voyager 1 holds the title of the most distant spacecraft, currently situated 15 billion miles away from Earth. Voyager 2 follows closely behind in interstellar space at a distance of more than 12 billion miles. Due to this vast distance, it takes over 18 hours for a signal to travel one way between Earth and Voyager 2.
