Rolls-Royce begins all-terrain Project Cullinan

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has taken a significant step forward with its ambitious Project Cullinan, as the first images of the all-terrain engineering mule have been released. This marks the beginning of the development journey for the luxurious all-terrain vehicle.

The initial engineering mule, built on a shortened Phantom Series II body, has been specifically designed to kickstart the development of an advanced all-wheel-drive suspension system, promising an ‘Effortless…Everywhere’ driving experience. While the mule provides an idea of the vehicle’s dimensions, it doesn’t reveal any design cues of the eventual high-sided, all-terrain motor car.

The mule is equipped with the first version of an entirely new suspension system, which will play a crucial role in assisting Rolls-Royce engineers in creating the final all-wheel-drive setup. The primary objective is to achieve the renowned ‘magic-carpet’ ride that Rolls-Royce is famous for, not only on smooth roads but also across challenging off-road terrains.

In the initial testing phase, Project Cullinan’s performance will be evaluated for its on-road behavior, including suspension performance and high-bodied stability. Various test facilities, as well as public roads, will be utilized to put the suspension through its paces, encompassing diverse road surfaces like Belgian Pave, cobblestones, corrugated concrete, noise measurement surfaces, resonance roads, and acceleration bumps.

A crucial aspect of the testing process is ensuring that Project Cullinan’s ride quality remains unparalleled both on-road and off-road. To achieve this, the engineering mules will be subjected to equal amounts of testing in on-road and off-road conditions, ensuring that future customers experience the same level of comfort and luxury, regardless of the terrain they traverse.
