World’s Most Dominant Aircraft Carriers Captivate Global Attention, Fueling Anticipation

Nimitz-class Aircraft Carriers: The Nimitz-class carriers represent a formidable fleet of ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers currently serving in the United States Navy. These colossal vessels rank among the largest warships ever constructed and have steadfastly formed the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s carrier strike groups for several decades. The USS Nimitz (CVN 68) led the class and was commissioned in 1975. Remarkably, despite their age, these carriers continue to be vital assets, thanks to their exceptional capabilities.

1. The Grand R. Ford Class, USA: Holding the title of the world’s largest aircraft carriers, the U.S. Navy’s Grand R. Ford Class battleships have made their mark. The lead carrier of this class, USS Grand R. Ford, entered service in May 2017, and construction is underway for the remaining four vessels of this remarkable class.

2. Nimitz Class, USA: Weighing in at a full load displacement of 97,000 tons, these 332.8-meter-long aircraft carriers boast a sprawling 4.5-acre flight deck capable of accommodating over 60 aircraft. With a crew capacity ranging from 3,000 to 3,200 ship’s company, 1,500 air wing personnel, and 500 other crew members, these carriers are true giants of the seas. They are powered by two nuclear reactors, propelling them to speeds exceeding 30 knots.

3. Queen Elizabeth Class, UK: The United Kingdom’s largest aircraft carriers also rank as the world’s third-largest. These colossal warships, the largest ever built for the Royal Navy, fall only behind Japan’s Yamato-class battleships among non-U.S. Navy vessels.

4. Liaoning, China: The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) operates China’s aircraft carrier, the Type 001 carrier Liaoning, which stands as the world’s fourth-largest. Initially intended as the second Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier for the Soviet Navy, China acquired the vessel after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Measuring 304.5 meters in length and 75 meters in beam, it is an impressive addition to China’s naval capabilities.

5. Shandong, China: China’s second aircraft carrier, Shandong, set sail on April 26, 2017. Distinguishing itself from its predecessor, the Liaoning, Shandong proudly claims the title of China’s first domestically built carrier.

6. Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia: Russia’s Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier ranks among the finest carriers currently in active service. Serving as the flagship of the Russian Navy, the Admiral Kuznetsov, measuring 305 meters in length and boasting a beam of 72 meters, commands a full load displacement of 58,500 tons. Beyond its versatile air operations capacity, this heavily armed vessel possesses the potential to function as a formidable aircraft carrier.

7. INS Vikrant, India: INS Vikrant stands as a significant milestone for India, being the nation’s first indigenous aircraft carrier conceived and constructed within its borders. Construction took place at the Cochin Shipyard Limited, and the ship has successfully completed sea trials, with commissioning slated for the coming months (expected in August 2022). The total project cost amounted to approximately US$3.1 billion.

8. Charles De Gaulle, France: As the first French nuclear-powered surface ship, the Charles De Gaulle holds a prominent position among active aircraft carriers, having been in service since 2001. With a total displacement of 36,000 tons and a structure spanning 780x103x27.8 feet, it remains the only nuclear-powered carrier in service outside of the U.S. Navy.

9. INS Vikramaditya, India: The Indian Navy’s largest in-service warship, INS Vikramaditya, also claims its place among the world’s largest aircraft carriers. This 283.5-meter-long vessel, with a beam of 61 meters, represents a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier and joined the fleet in 2013.

10. Cavour, Italy: Serving as the flagship of the Italian Navy, the Cavour aircraft carrier boasts a full load displacement of 30,000 tons and features an array of defense systems, including short-range defense systems, guns, and decoy launchers.
